Puerto Viejo boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, each with its distinct charm. From the lively waves of Salsa Brava to the serene shores of Playa Cocles, there’s a perfect spot for everyone.

Salsa Brava is renowned for its powerful surf breaks, attracting surfers from all over. Here, visitors can witness surfers tackling the daunting waves or even take lessons under the guidance of local instructors.

In contrast, Playa Cocles offers a more tranquil environment, ideal for sunbathers and families. With its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters, it's an inviting spot to unwind and soak up the sun.

The pristine beaches also serve as a gateway to various water activities, including snorkeling and diving. The nearby coral reefs teem with vibrant marine life, making underwater exploration another highlight of Puerto Viejo.

For those eager for more adventure, nearby Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience. This refuge combines scenic landscapes with unique wildlife experiences, making it a perfect destination for eco-tourists. There are several cocoa farms in the area and I stopped at one and I went on a tour and we got to make chocolate and a newborn sloth! It was born that morning.

I had never had this spice before-but I really liked it. It's Galangal. Similar to ginger, but a totally different taste. And the interior of the cocao plant is those furry white pieces. Middle left. Doesn't taste anything like roasted and processed chocolate! It was a very informative tour.
